F or his contribution to the global popularity and promotion of reggae music, international recording artiste Sean Paul Henriques, known professionally as Sean Paul, was granted Commander of the Order of Distinction (CD) at the Cer emony of Investiture and Presentation of National Awards held at King's House on Heroes Day.
Recognized widely as a superstar in the genre, Sean Paul crossed over into the global mainstream in the early 2000s with his unique sound, performance and lyrical styles that were patterned off musical influences such as Super Cat. Over the years, Sean Paul appeared on groundbreaking collaborations with Busta Rhymes, Major Lazer, Pharrell Williams, Sia, Dua Lipa and Stefflon Don that broadened the entertainer's scope in Europe, China, and Latin America.
VIBE OF THE COUNTRY
Speaking to THE STAR following the awards ceremony yesterday, Sean Paul said: "It is the producers of the reggae and dancehall rhythms and recorded productions that carry the whole vibe of the country in how they compose, produce and release the music."
The entertainer has also credited the contribution of local producers for his success across a wide market. "We always hear the names of reggae acts being mentioned for the National Awards but the talent in Jamaica extends far beyond the entertainers; we have gifted producers like the two duos Sly and Robbie and Steely and Clevie and even Dave Kelly," he said.
While the national honour was more than the Gimme The Light artiste expected for his work as an entertainer, being one of the youngest in his field to have received the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander, he said it serves to be a symbol of appreciation for the music he has delivered throughout his career which spans over 25 years.
He shared: "To have received the awards among some of the greats in the field is one of the foremost recognitions for me, having worked hard to contribute quality productions to our popular music that is comprised of a wide range of musical styles and will continue to lead by example."
The 46-year-old entertainer was among six reggae entertainers including Rita Marley, three of Inner Circle Band's foundation members Ian Lewis, Roger Lewis and Jacob Miller, drummer Desi Jones, and three veteran producers Gussie Clarke, Patrick Roberts and Herbie Miller who were presented with awards.
